Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group

The first New Zealand breast cancer register was established in 2000 as the Auckland Breast Cancer Register (ABCR) and has since grown in size, scope, resources and technology.

The Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group (ABCSG) runs the Auckland & Northland regional division of the Breast Cancer Foundation National Register(). This is a Ministry of Health secured web-based database built with the intention of creating a population-based picture of breast cancer care in New Zealand.

The register records detailed information about diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of patients with breast cancer, which allows the medical community to monitor standards of care in Auckland and benchmark against national and international treatment standards.

This database also allows multidisciplinary research into the many aspects of breast cancer in Auckland and New Zealand. The information stored on the register is completely confidential and can only be released through strict governance control.

A patient information sheet or brochure is given to the patients on their First Specialist Assessment (FSA) after confirmation of cancer which provides facts about breast cancer in New Zealand and explains the purpose of collecting data for New Zealand Breast Cancer Register. It also states that all patients will be automatically registered unless they opt out by contacting the register staff.

For more information on the NZBCR including the Participant Information Sheet (Patient Brochure) please contact Breast Cancer Foundation NZ() at 0800 BCNurse.

To request data from Auckland Breast Cancer Register (ABCR), the requestor must download and complete the data request form [PDF, 94 KB] and email it to breastcancerregister@adhb.govt.nz

The Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group gratefully acknowledges the funding of the Register by Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand and the administrative support of Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland.
